Most "best fractional VP of Sales" lists are written by one of the firms on the list, and they quietly rank themselves first. I'm one of the firms on this list too, so I'm not going to pretend I'm neutral. What I can do is be accurate. I'm a B2B SaaS sales leader, and I'd rather you hire the right fit, even if it isn't me, than hire me and regret it.
What are the main types of fractional VP of Sales options?
Every option on this list falls into one of three buckets:
- Marketplaces and talent platforms. A large network of executives. You (or their recruiters) search, shortlist, interview and pick. You get choice and speed. You also do more of the vetting yourself, and the quality depends entirely on the individual you pick.
- Firms and matching services. The firm has a bench of leaders, matches one to you, and usually runs the contract and some quality control. More hand-holding, often a methodology, usually a higher price or a markup.
- Solo operators. You hire the person directly. No middle layer, no markup, and the person who sells you is the person who does the work. The tradeoff: limited capacity and no bench if it doesn't work out.
None of these is better in general. A Series A company that needs a CRO-level leader in a week has different needs than a $1M ARR founder who still closes every deal.

What does each option actually offer?
Activated Scale
What it is: A Techstars-backed company that connects B2B SaaS startups with vetted, US-based fractional sales leaders and sales talent, and also does recruiting and contract-to-hire. Model: part-time (they cite 10 to 20 hours a week or 2 to 4 days a week) or full-time interim, with an option to convert to full-time. Best for: seed to Series A, founder-led SaaS companies, especially if you may also need reps, not just a leader. Pricing: their cost guide states "Monthly retainers are $12,000 plus performance bonus." Ask what the bonus is tied to and what a full-time conversion costs.
Bolster
What it is: An executive talent platform with an on-demand marketplace of more than 20,000 executives, plus full-time executive search and board search. Model: you search the marketplace yourself or work with their Talent Consultants; engagements can be interim, fractional, project-based or advisory. Best for: venture-backed teams that want to see a lot of profiles and are comfortable doing their own vetting. Pricing: published on their pricing page: fractional and interim hires are "$2,500 upfront + 20% markup." Full-time executive search is listed at $90,000 for a first search. Note that the 20% markup sits on top of whatever rate the executive charges.
Chief Outsiders
What it is: A Houston-based fractional executive firm that has offered fractional CMOs since 2009 and launched a fractional Chief Sales Officer practice in January 2023. Their site describes a bench of more than 100 marketing and sales executives. Model: a part-time member of your executive team, virtual, in person or hybrid. Best for: mid-market and private equity backed companies, particularly when marketing and sales both need senior attention. Pricing: not published. Their FAQ says cost "varies based on the executive's experience, scope and duration."
Go Fractional
What it is: A network of fractional operators (they cite 18,000+) where executive recruiters hand-pick a shortlist for you. Their VP of Sales page currently focuses on fractional and interim CROs. Model: 20-minute discovery call, shortlist within days, contract through Go Fractional. They state no recruiter fees. Best for: startups that need a revenue leader quickly and want someone else to do the first round of screening. Pricing: published: fractional CRO from $5,000/month (about 25 hours a month at a $200/hour average) and interim CRO from $24,000/month.
Klozers
What it is: A sales training company founded in 2014, headquartered in London with offices in Dortmund, Austin and Melbourne, that also provides fractional sales management. Model: a part-time sales leader, from days per week to days per month, priced on your team size and the outcomes you want. Best for: early-stage companies with fewer than about 10 salespeople, especially if training is part of the need. Pricing: not published for their own services.
Pulse RevOps
What it is: The brand of Kory White, an independent fractional CRO based in the Annapolis, Maryland area who partners with CRO Syndicate. Model: embedded, part-time or interim, scoped month to month. Best for: companies in the DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia area that want someone local, though he also works remotely. Pricing: not published; the site says pricing is scoped to days per week and the work involved.
Sales Gravy
What it is: A sales training and enablement company. Fractional sales leadership is one of several services. Model: three published tiers by time: Coach (2 to 4 hours a week, teams of 2 to 5 reps), Manager (5 to 10 hours a week, teams of 3 to 10 reps) and Executive (16 to 32 hours a month), with leaders trained in the Sales Gravy Blueprint methodology. Best for: companies that want leadership and a structured training program from the same place. Pricing: dollar amounts not published.
Sales Xceleration
What it is: A network of fractional sales leaders in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia who use a common Certified Sales Operating Management System. Model: a local fractional sales leader builds your framework, playbook and team. Best for: small and mid-sized businesses across a wide range of industries, including non-SaaS businesses like manufacturing and professional services. Pricing: not published. They report an average 32% sales increase within the first year; that is their own figure.
Skaled
What it is: A sales consulting firm with more than 30 fractional sales leaders. Model: one leader per client, part-time each week, covering go-to-market strategy, forecasting, hiring plans and running the team's one-on-ones and meetings. Best for: companies that want an individual leader with a consulting firm behind them. Pricing: not published.
Vendux
What it is: A curated matching service that uses a process it calls PerfectMatch to place pre-vetted fractional, interim or temp-to-perm sales leaders. It describes a roster of more than 1,400 sales leaders, most with 20+ years of experience. Model: free assessment, match, statement of work; their FAQ says clients pay for days actually worked, with a monthly retainer as the typical minimum. Best for: SMBs in roughly the $1M to $50M range across industries, and anyone who wants the option to hire the leader full-time later. Pricing: their cost page cites about $4K to $25K a month as the typical range for a fractional sales leader.
GSD Associates (my firm)
What it is: Me. I'm Michael Flournoy, based in Charlotte, NC. I started at QuickManage, a fleet management SaaS company, as their fractional VP of Sales and I'm now their Chief Commercial Officer. Model: I work as an embedded VP of Sales: in your pipeline reviews, coaching reps on live deals, and on late-stage calls to help close. I work remotely nationwide, travel for in-person meetings and work trade shows with your reps. Best for: B2B SaaS founders around $500K to $10M+ ARR who are still the main closer, or who have reps and no system. Pricing: published: Starter $6K/month (up to 2 days a week), Full Engagement $8K/month (up to 3 days a week), Strategic $10K/month (full-time equivalent). Three-month minimum, then month-to-month. Not a fit if: you want a bench of interchangeable leaders, you need someone in your office five days a week, or you're outside B2B.
How do you choose the right fractional VP of Sales?
Use this order. It saves a lot of wasted calls.
- Name the job. Is it build (no process, founder still closing), fix (reps exist, results are inconsistent) or scale (a working motion that needs more people)? Build and fix are fractional jobs. Scale usually isn't.
- Pick the type. Want choice and will do your own vetting? Marketplace. Want someone else to vet and manage the contract? Firm or matching service. Want to talk directly to the person who will do the work, with no markup? Solo operator.
- Check stage fit. Ask for a specific example at your ARR, with your deal size and sales cycle. A leader who ran a 60-person team at $80M ARR is not automatically right for a three-rep team at $2M.
- Check the time math. Ask how many clients they carry and how many hours you get. If the answer is five clients and "as much time as you need," be skeptical.
- Agree on 90-day outcomes in writing. Pipeline created, stage conversion, a hire made, a playbook in use. Not "improve sales."
- Talk to a founder they worked for. Not a colleague. A founder who paid the invoice.
What are the red flags?
- They lead with a framework before they've asked about your deals.
- They won't name a single company, number or reference.
- Month one is "research" with nothing changed in your pipeline.
- They've never held the job full-time and never carried a number.
- Hourly billing for ongoing leadership work, which rewards hours, not outcomes.
- A 12-month lock-in before they've proven anything.
- A comparison guide that hides the author's own firm at the top. (Yes, I see the irony. That's why mine is labeled.)
When should you NOT hire a fractional VP of Sales?
I'll lose some deals by saying this, but it's true. Don't hire one if:
- You don't have product-market fit yet. If fewer than about 10 customers have bought and stayed, the founder should still be selling. A sales leader can't process their way out of a product problem.
- You already have a proven motion and 8 to 10+ reps. You need a full-time leader who lives in the business every day.
- You won't give up control. If every pricing call and every deal still needs your sign-off, nobody can lead sales for you, fractional or not.
- You need a recruiter, not a leader. If the plan is already written and you only need reps, a recruiter is cheaper.
- You can't fund at least 90 days. Most sales cycles are longer than a month. Three months is the honest minimum to see real signal.
How much should you expect to pay?
From the published numbers above, most fractional sales leadership lands between about $5,000 and $15,000 a month for real part-time leadership, with interim full-time coverage costing more (Go Fractional lists interim CROs from $24,000/month). Compare that with a full-time VP of Sales at $180K to $250K base salary before variable pay, equity, benefits and a recruiting fee. I break the math down in my fractional VP of Sales cost guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best fractional VP of Sales firm for B2B SaaS?
There is no single best firm. Choose the type first: a marketplace like Bolster or Go Fractional if you want choice and will vet candidates yourself, a firm or matching service like Vendux, Activated Scale, Chief Outsiders, Sales Xceleration or Skaled if you want them to vet and manage the placement, or a solo operator like Pulse RevOps or GSD Associates if you want to hire the person directly with no markup.
How much does a fractional VP of Sales cost in 2026?
Published prices range from about $5,000 a month (Go Fractional's starting fractional CRO rate) to $12,000 a month plus a performance bonus (Activated Scale), with Vendux citing about $4,000 to $25,000 a month as the typical range. GSD Associates charges $6,000 to $10,000 a month with a three-month minimum.
Is a fractional sales marketplace better than a fractional sales firm?
Neither is better in general. Marketplaces give you more choice and usually move faster, but you do more of the vetting. Firms and matching services do the vetting and manage the contract, usually at a higher price or with a markup.
Which fractional sales firms publish their pricing?
As of October 2026, Activated Scale, Bolster, Go Fractional and GSD Associates publish prices on their own sites, and Vendux publishes a typical range. Chief Outsiders, Klozers, Pulse RevOps, Sales Gravy, Sales Xceleration and Skaled do not publish dollar pricing.
When should a SaaS company not hire a fractional VP of Sales?
Skip it if you have not found product-market fit, if you already have a proven motion with 8 to 10 or more reps and need a full-time leader, if the founder will not hand over control of deals and pricing, or if you cannot fund at least 90 days.
